The Kosto Family

Military Makeover with Montel® salutes the Kosto Family, embodying the spirit of service and endurance. Matt Kosto’s path to the Air Force began in Northwest Oregon, influenced by a family of veterans and a high school teacher who ignited his passion for military service. Enlisting just before his senior year of high school, Matt initially planned for a four-year commitment. However, his dedication to service extended over two decades, culminating in his retirement as a Master Sergeant specializing in aircraft maintenance and engineering. His military career included multiple deployments to Bahrain, Kuwait, Turkey, and Afghanistan, supporting Operations Southern and Northern Watch and the Global War on Terror. A pivotal moment in Matt’s career occurred during his deployment to Alaska, where he responded to a C-17 crash, securing the site and providing emergency support under challenging conditions. His leadership and service during this time exemplified his commitment to his country. Following Matt’s military service, the Kosto family faced additional hardships. In October 2021, Matt was involved in a motorcycle accident, resulting in the loss of his right leg below the knee. After five months, he received his first prosthetic through the VA. However, complications from a hematoma required a second surgery, causing further setbacks in his recovery. Despite these challenges, Matt adapted to his new reality and now serves in the Federal Civil Service as an Air Force Engineering and Technical Service Equipment Specialist, supporting aircraft maintenance for both active-duty and reserve units. Virginia, Matt’s wife, has been a steadfast support throughout these trials. In 2020, she was diagnosed with stage 4 anal cancer, shifting the family’s focus from home renovations to a critical fight for her health. As Virginia completed her cancer treatment and regained her strength, they were finally able to return to some semblance of normalcy. As Virginia recovered and Matt adapted to life after his accident, the Kosto family faced a series of setbacks that would have been insurmountable for many. Nevertheless, they pressed forward. Virginia now works as a medical assistant for a neurology group in Arizona, where the family settled after Matt’s retirement. Their two adult children, living nearby, now continue to embody the resilience and strength passed down by their parents. The Kosto family’s story is a clear example of the sacrifices of military families. As their journey unfolds on Military Makeover with Montel®, we are proud to support the transformation of their home, ensuring it reflects the strength, perseverance, and unity that define their lives. Through the generosity of our partners and the community’s support, we are committed to making their home renovations dreams come true. Join us as we honor Matt, Virginia, and their family, whose courage and commitment continue to inspire.
