Artificial intelligence is becoming more and more integrated into every aspect of society. From personalized online shopping to self-driving cars and robotic drive-through workers, AI is at the forefront of many industries. There are however some human capabilities that technology just can’t replace. One sector you may not have expected to see AI in is the military. Nevertheless, there are in fact a number of uses for AI in the military as well as plans on the horizon.
Current Uses of AI in the Military
Commercial AI is currently being used in the military mainly for administrative tasks. Troops use it to write memos and recommendations, and complete evaluations.
Other applications include cybersecurity and data mining, combat simulation, predictive maintenance, among other uses.
The Future of AI in the Military
Some branches of the military, like the Navy and Space Force, are more hesitant to implement its applications into their systems while others, particularly the army, are ahead of the curve. The army is in favor of introducing generative AI into their service to ease the work of their soldiers according to Steve Beynon. Wargaming, planning missions, and improving weaponry and training are a few potential major applications for AI. AI may continue to undergo developments meaning that its use case possibilities may only grow.
Risks
Although there are many advantages that accompany improvements in technology such as AI, there are also many possible risks. The threats posed by AI, particularly security threats, explain why some services of the military are unwilling to integrate AI practices into their work.
There are inherent security and cybersecurity vulnerabilities associated with the use of AI. The military handles sensitive, classified data, so it’s imperative that this information be protected.
As other countries, like the Ukraine, begin to integrate this technology into their militaries it will likely become necessary to do the same to ensure we can compete at the same level.
