The last time that the U.S saw a draft for the military was in 1973. As the unpredictable political climate of the world stands, people can’t help but wonder if a draft is a serious possibility in the near future. And if it is, what does that mean for you? Who will be affected by it? What will the process look like?

The Process

If a national emergency requiring a force that exceeds the military’s capability to recruit the necessary strength occurs, the Selective Service outlined the following course of action:

  1. Congress amends the Military Selective Service Act authorizing the president to engage in a draft.
  1. All selective service personnel are ordered to report for duty.
  1. A live lottery drawing birthdays establishes the order for induction. Those with 20th birthdays in the year of the lottery are the first to receive induction orders.
  1. Those inducted report to a Military Entrance Processing station (MEPS) where they undergo a series of evaluations to determine their eligibility for service. At this time exemption claims can also be made.
  1. Exemption and deferment claims are processed.
  1. The first draftees are inducted.

Claims

At the time of the draft, men will receive classifications based on their individual circumstances and eligibility status. Those who are qualified (1-A) could then file claims for exemptions and deferments.

Deferments

Inductees may be able to delay their induction if the following applies to them.

  • Ministerial students
  • Those with people depending on them for support – Hardship deferment

Postponements

Inductions are most commonly postponed for the following reasons.

  • High School student
  • College student

Exemptions

People may be exempt from service completely if they fall into the following categories:

  • Ministers
  • Elected officials
  • Veterans
  • Immigrants

As of right now there is no draft on the horizon. However, a draft could certainly occur in the event of a national emergency, so knowing what to expect is valuable information.
