Andre Braugher, the star of the comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, passed away at age 61. Braugher died after a recent illness, but now his rep confirms Braugher’s death was due to lung cancer. It is still unclear how long Braugher was battling with the illness.
Career
The actor is most notably known for his role as Captain Ray Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He also starred in Homicide: Life on the Street for the first six seasons. Braugher earned 11 Emmy nominations throughout his career.
He won two Emmys in his lifetime. The first for his role as Detective Frank Pemberton in Homicide in 1998. His second for his performance as Nick Atwater in Thief. Braugher received four Emmy nominations for his performance in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the NBC-FOX sitcom.
Tributes
Co-stars of Braugher have paid tribute to the late actor since the news.
“Can’t believe you’re gone so soon,” his Brooklyn Nine-Nine costar Terry Crews began in a heartfelt Instagram post.
“I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you, and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent,” Crews, 55, continued.
His ABC’s second Live in Front of a Studio Audience special costar Viola Davis shared a tribute on Instagram, writing, “Heartbreaking. You went way too soon. I loved every minute of working with you….your talent, your bottomless heart, your love of your family….your wife. You were a great man. God bless your children, your beautiful wife ….. You will be missed Andre.”
Shonda Rhimes, known as the creator of Grey’s Anatomy, produced Braugher’s last project before his untimely death, The Residence. She shared a photo of Braugher on Instagram and wrote a heartfelt message, “deeply saddened by the news of Andre Braugher’s passing.”
“I mourn not only the loss of an extraordinary actor but, more profoundly, the departure of a warm and kind soul. His talent was undeniable, but it was his genuine kindness that truly set him apart. Rest well,” Rhimes added.
Braugher was a Chicago native. He is survived by his wife, Ami Brabson, and his children, John Wesley Braugher, Michael Braugher, and Isaiah Braugher. He was 61 years old.
